However, the events along the way, such as getting a good grade on a test, or getting a good report card, or getting into the College of your choice, are the enjoyable "events" (i.e. the rewards) for going through the process.

This is important when we consider setting our goals and seeking to achieve them. Obviously, if the event itself is the only reason we setting the goal then it makes sense that we are going to struggle through the process required to realize the goal. That's just common sense isn't it?

So, when you set a goal you need to consider the process of how this goal is going to come about. If you decide that you want to get an A+ in Maths (and by the way rule number one of goal setting is to make the goal specific not airy fairy like "I want to improve in Math") then what you really need to ask yourself is "Who do I need to become to achieve an A+ in Maths? What actions do I need to take on a daily basis to achieve an A+ in Maths?"

Goal achievement isn't a result or magic or miracles (although many of us just wish it was that simple). It actually just comes back to understanding what you want, why you want it and who you need to be to make it happen. Once you have all that in mind, the process will take over and the event will take care of itself. But if you follow the trend and focus on the event, you can be sure you will struggle to reach it. So before you get comfortable with a free program, make sure it gives you the option to print.Next, you want to commit your outline or mind map to memory using mnemonics (word tricks, i.e. Every Good Boy Does Fine for the notes of the scale that go through lines), color hints, or any visual clues you can think of. Practice again and again until you can re-create your outline or map by heart.

It is important to over-learn the material, so it does not disappear out of nervousness when you start the exam. In fact, it is a good idea to do a "data dump" before the test starts, too. That is where you take a blank corner of the test paper and jot down any formulas, mnemonics, dates, etc., that you fear you are going to forget. Once they are recorded, you can relax!

You can now see that studying for essay exams is a defined process. The only question that remains is--how do you know when you have studied enough? When you can easily replicate your outline or mind map without any omissions, you have over-learned the material, and you can walk into the exam confidently!

Study at a University

If you're getting ready to apply for university, then perhaps you know exactly what you want to study, where you want to study, and what you want to be when you've finished your degree. Alternatively, you might be doing you're a Levels, and not decided what degree you want to do yet.

Here's what you should consider.

1. If you enjoy languages, then perhaps you'll want to study them in more detail, and become more fluent, and improve your accent, and knowledge of the language. You might want to live abroad, or maybe you want to be a translator.

2. Business studies covers a multitude of disciplines that are necessary in the modern business environment. Perhaps you'll specialise in marketing, economics or accounting, or maybe you just want an overview of how to manage staff and run a business.

3. You might want to study one of the sciences. Perhaps you want to be a doctor or a vet, or a chemist or a physicist, and so need a degree in your chosen science.

4. If you're sporty then you might want to study sports science, or learn how to become a coach, or a physiotherapist, or get involved in sports nutrition and diet.

5. Even thought you might have used computers from a very young age, you might not have any recognised qualifications. If you want to get a job in IT, whether providing support for a large company, or writing databases, or designing websites, you might still benefit from a computing course.

6. Perhaps you'll want to know more about Psychology, and why people do things, and how they do it. you might want to get into profiling criminals for the police, or designing layouts for supermarkets.

7. You might want to study Geography or Geology, and learn more about the earth and the world. Perhaps you want to do your bit for the environment, or become a geography teacher.

8. Perhaps History has always interested you, and you want to know more about the past. You might want to study a particular period, or country, or learn more about how a specific event affected history.

9. Maybe you know that you want to become a teacher, and so you want to take a Teacher Training course which will cover everything you need to know so you can teach primary school children.

10. Perhaps you want to take a Nursing course, so that you can become a nurse. After you've done your nurse training and qualified, you might want to specialise in a particular area or nursing.
